Rockdale was originally settled by Slovenian and Lithuanian immigrants in the 19th century and incorporated as a village in 1903. During the 1930s, the U.S. Navy built ships along the Des Plaines River at Rockdale, a chapter that shaped the small village's identity. Rockdale's population has changed significantly since that original wave of European immigrant settlement, and today the village has a significant Hispanic population.
