Will County's Oldest Settlement, Founded at a Sawmill
Plainfield is the oldest community in Will County. Settlement began at 'Walkers' Grove' on the banks of the DuPage River by 1828, when James Walker — son-in-law of Methodist missionary Rev. Jesse Walker, who had established a mission to the Potawatomi in 1826 — built a sawmill there. The settlement grew into a stop on the Chicago-Ottawa stagecoach road, and the 'Halfway House' inn was built in 1834. That same year, Chester Ingersoll platted the Village of Plainfield immediately north of Walkers' Grove; the two areas were known together as Plainfield by 1841.
What Nearly Two Centuries of Growth Means for Foundations
A community with roots this early carries a wider range of building eras than most of its neighbors — from the original Walkers' Grove-era lots along the DuPage River to the many decades of infill and subdivision growth that followed. All of it sits on the dolomite bedrock and variable glacial-till clay layer typical of the Joliet area, and in a town built up over nearly two centuries rather than one or two decades, matching a foundation plan to the specific age and location of the home matters more than it would somewhere built in a single wave.
