A 1673 Passage, Then a 1960s Subdivision Boom
Crest Hill's recorded history reaches back to 1673, when Louis Joliet and Père Marquette passed through the area on their return trip up the Mississippi. Its modern shape came far later: a post-World War II building boom brought new residential subdivisions and veterans' housing through the 1940s, and the community incorporated as a village on January 22, 1960 — specifically to avoid annexation by the City of Joliet and keep the tax revenue from a shopping center then under development. Crest Hill had 5,887 residents at incorporation, became a city in 1969, and its population had already climbed to 7,460 by 1970, a 26.7% jump driven by continued subdivision construction.
What One Compressed Building Boom Means for Foundations Today
That single wave of postwar subdivision building left Crest Hill with a fairly uniform housing stock — slab and crawlspace foundations built quickly to meet 1950s-60s demand, sitting on the same dolomite-and-glacial-till base found across the Joliet area. Because so much of the city went up in one compressed building push, foundation issues here tend to run in patterns by subdivision: homes built the same year, on the same fill, in the same section, often show similar settlement or drainage symptoms as that original construction ages.
